About the event

Sunday, October 20 from 1:30 - 4:30 pm

(This program will be recorded and sent to registrants)

Jungian arts-based research is doing therapy with the world in a way that is open to everyone, artist or non-artist in any genre, and can be done for no cost. It is not art psychotherapy, which is an honorable profession with its own rationale and training. Rather, JABR combines the Jungian cosmos, alchemy, and the arts-based research developed in the academy since the 1990s. It provides a new paradigm for research that validates what is special about Jungian creativity, the synchronicities, archetypal patterns, psychic spontaneity, and the epistemology of the image as autonomous and generative.

Put another way, JABR is doing creativity as being and knowing. The workshop will introduce JABR in four modes of: paradigm, preparation, process and projection. Participants are encouraged to arrive with an artwork or image of an artwork of their own choosing. This can be a work by the participant or simply a favorite painting, poem, story, film or dance, etc. During the workshop, participants will engage in all four stages and will be able to continue the project afterward, if they wish. JABR is now a recognized methodology for graduate research – and also, it is a way of divination that anyone can develop for themselves, or do as a collaborative transformation of the psyche.

Susan Rowland, PhD, teaches at Pacifica Graduate Institute and is the author of ten books on Jung including with Joel Weishaus, Jungian Arts-Based Research and the Nuclear Enchantment of New Mexico. For decades Susan has been working on a project to examine feminine heroism as a way to cultural renewal. This JABR project has resulted in the Mary Wandwalker mysteries series, the third of which Murder on Family Grounds: A Mary Wandwalker Mystery was published in March 2024. Susan lives in Oregon with poet, Joel Weishaus. Her website is: susanrowland-books.com
